Ashok Leyland to Set Up Electric Bus Plant in Uttar Pradesh

Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja has revealed in an interview that the Ashok Leyland Uttar Pradesh e-bus plant will be operational within a year.

In an exclusive interview with CNBC, Hinduja said that the plant which will focus mainly on electric buses is scheduled to commence operations within a span of 12 to 13 months. The plant will initially have the capacity to manufacture 2,500 buses, with the potential to scale up to 5,000 units.

Furthermore, Hinduja underscored the significance of the Uttar Pradesh market, noting the government’s strong interest in expanding electric vehicle (EV) adoption, particularly in the bus segment. He expressed confidence in the company’s ability to effectively cater to the state’s evolving transportation needs by establishing a local presence.

Hinduja also highlighted that this plant will mark a significant milestone for Ashok Leyland, as it will be the company’s inaugural facility to prioritize the production of EVs over internal combustion engine (ICE) products, aligning with the broader industry shift towards sustainable mobility solutions.

Ashok Leyland signed an MoU with the Government of Uttar Pradesh to set up the electric bus plant in September 2023 and the foundation stone was laid in February 2024.
