InstaBus Brings AI-Powered Customer Support to India’s Intercity Bus Operators

India’s intercity bus industry has digitised ticketing, payments and fleet tracking. But one part of the passenger journey still relies heavily on phone calls, conductors and office support teams: customer service.
InstaBus is attempting to change that with an AI-powered customer support platform designed specifically for private intercity bus operators. The platform uses an AI voice agent to manage passenger conversations throughout the travel journey, from booking confirmations and pre-departure reminders to in-trip assistance and post-trip feedback.
AI Voice Support Built for Bus Operations
Unlike conventional chatbots, InstaBus uses a voice-based AI assistant that can speak with passengers in their preferred language. The platform supports more than 27 languages, including English, Hindi and regional Indian languages.
Its AI agent can handle routine interactions around bookings, boarding information, journey updates, passenger queries, complaints and feedback. According to InstaBus, the system can resolve up to 90% of passenger queries without human intervention.
The objective is not simply to automate a call centre. It is to give bus operators a digital support layer that remains available throughout the journey.
Moving Beyond Customer Service
For private bus operators, passenger communication can become difficult as fleets and routes expand.
A passenger may want to know where the bus is, when it will arrive, where to board, or what to do if there is a delay. Traditionally, these questions are handled by conductors, drivers or office support executives, creating an additional operational burden.
InstaBus is designed to shift many of these interactions to AI while allowing more complex situations to be escalated to human teams.
“By combining AI with real-world bus operations, we’re helping operators deliver faster customer support, improve passenger satisfaction and create new opportunities for repeat business — all without adding to their support teams.”
Gautam Bahri, Founder, InstaBus
That distinction is important. The opportunity for AI in bus operations is not limited to reducing calls. Better and faster communication can also influence passenger confidence, reviews and the likelihood of booking again.
AI as a Revenue and Retention Tool
InstaBus is also positioning its platform beyond basic customer support.
The company says proactive passenger engagement can help operators generate up to 20% more return-trip bookings, while online ratings and reviews can increase by as much as 25%. These figures are company claims and have not been independently verified.
The platform can engage passengers after a booking, during their journey and after arrival, creating multiple opportunities for operators to remain connected with customers.
This is particularly relevant for India’s fragmented private intercity bus market, where many small and mid-sized operators do not have the resources to maintain large customer-support teams.
Where AI Fits Into the Bus Industry
The broader shift is significant.
Digital transformation in the bus industry has largely focused on online ticketing, GPS tracking, fleet management and payments. AI could become the next layer, connecting these systems directly with passenger communication.
For an operator, that means the same technology can potentially support a passenger before departure, provide information during the journey and collect feedback after arrival.
InstaBus is now deploying its platform with intercity bus operators and onboarding additional fleets as it looks to expand across India’s organised bus transport market. The company’s proposition is ultimately simple: make passenger communication as available and responsive as the digital systems already managing the bus itself.
