A staff bus burst out in flames on Wednesday morning in the Hinjewadi area of Pune, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving five others with severe burn injuries.

The incident unfolded at approximately 7:30 AM when a mini-bus, carrying employees of the private firm Vyoma Graphics, caught fire while on its way to work.

According to the local police, 14 employees were in the minibus involved in the Hinjewadi bus fire when the fire started near the driver’s cabin.

The fire spread quickly, and the bus was soon engulfed in flames, trapping several people inside.

The Hinjewadi bus fire occurred while the vehicle was ferrying the passengers to their office. The driver, upon noticing the fire, immediately jumped out of the vehicle.

However, the fire spread quickly, and some employees were unable to escape.

“Some employees couldn’t exit through the front door, and the rear door failed to open, trapping them inside,” explained Kanhaiya Thorat, Senior Police Inspector at the Hinjewadi Police Station.

The fire intensified after the vehicle collided with a divider, making it harder for the passengers to escape. Eight people managed to get out of the bus, but four remained trapped and tragically perished in the blaze.

Firefighters quickly arrived at the scene, and the fire was extinguished after some time.

The five injured individuals were immediately transported to Ruby Hall Clinic, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

Dr. Sudheer Rai, COO of Ruby Hall Clinic Hinjewadi, confirmed that two patients had sustained over 40% burns and were in critical condition.

One other individual suffered 20% burns, while another sustained 5% burns and remained unconscious. The other patient with minor burns is stable. Tragically, five others were declared dead at the scene.

Dr. Rai stated, “In such emergencies, immediate and specialized treatment is crucial. Our medical team is providing the highest level of care and intervention to the injured.” He also extended his condolences to the families of the victims and urged the public to remain vigilant about fire safety.

The police, alongside fire brigade officials, are continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. “The fire started near the driver’s seat, and we are trying to ascertain how it erupted. Further probe is ongoing,” stated Inspector Kanhaiya Thorat.
