New TNSTC AC Buses: A Three-Phase Expansion Plan
The state government has announced the addition of 4,300 new buses in three phases. In the first phase, over 1,500 new buses are already on the roads, serving various intercity and intracity routes.
Currently, TNSTC operates over 1,080 daily services, carrying more than one lakh passengers across Tamil Nadu. A senior TNSTC official confirmed, “We will continue to introduce new buses regularly to meet increasing passenger demand.”
New AC Buses for Major Cities
As part of the modernisation effort, 10 new air-conditioned buses will be launched within the next 10 days. These will operate on key routes in Chennai and other major urban centres, offering passengers a cooler, quieter, and more premium travel experience—ideal for Tamil Nadu’s hot climate.
Luxury Sleeper & Seater Coaches for Pongal
In time for the Pongal festival in January, TNSTC will introduce 110 luxury sleeper and seater coaches. These buses are being designed for long-distance and overnight routes, giving travellers an option that rivals private operators in comfort and amenities.
Key features of the upcoming luxury coaches include:
- Modern, ergonomic interiors
- Reclining sleeper and semi-sleeper arrangements
- Advanced safety systems
- Improved passenger facilities, such as USB charging and reading lights
These additions are expected to be especially popular for intercity routes and overnight travel, easing congestion during festive and holiday seasons.
“Every year, there is a huge rush of passengers during the Pongal season – almost all buses are packed. Now that TNSTC is bringing new buses, we can hope for easier and comfortable journeys during the peak season,” says Ramakrishna Reddy, a TNSTC passenger.
Tender for TNSTC AC Buses Ready
The tender process for these buses is nearly complete, with preparations already underway for deployment. According to transport department sources, the new fleet will not just replace ageing buses but significantly boost capacity on busy corridors.

A Step Towards Safer, Smarter, and More Comfortable Travel
The introduction of the new TNSTC AC buses and luxury sleeper coaches marks a pivotal moment for Tamil Nadu’s public transport network. By providing a more reliable and comfortable alternative to private travel, TNSTC aims to:
- Reduce road congestion
- Encourage greater use of public transport
- Improve overall passenger satisfaction
With 4,300 modern buses planned over the next few years, Tamil Nadu is positioning itself as a leader in state-run transport modernisation.
