The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a 14.95% hike in ticket prices across all routes, effective from today.

The increase in fares is attributed to the rising cost of machinery and equipment, according to MSRTC officials.

The last fare hike was in 2021, and since then, the state transport authority had been in discussions with the state government regarding the need for a revision.

According to a senior MSRTC official, “The cost of operations has gone up significantly, necessitating this increase.”

Reasons Behind MSRTC Bus Fare Hike

The MSRTC has cited several critical factors that have necessitated the fare hike, impacting passengers across Maharashtra. Below are the key reasons:

  • Increased operational costs due to higher fuel prices and equipment expenses.
  • Financial recovery post-pandemic, as MSRTC faced massive losses.
  • Previous strike impact, which resulted in a loss of ₹4,000 crore.
  • Efforts to improve service quality and sustain operations.

Despite recent financial challenges, MSRTC reported a profit of ₹16.86 crore in August 2024, the first in nine years. However, this fare hike aims to ensure long-term financial stability and improve bus services.

Passenger Reaction: Discontent Over Higher MSRTC Bus Fare

The new MSRTC bus fare will impact nearly 55 lakh passengers daily, urging the transport body to enhance service quality to justify the price increase.

But the hike has drawn criticism from daily commuters, who believe the increase will add to their financial burden.

Sanchit Tiwary, a frequent Pune-Mumbai traveler, expressed concern:
“Prices of all commodities are rising, and now MSRTC services have also become expensive. The service quality has declined over the years, yet we have to pay more.”
