Get Ready to Pay More as RSRTC Fare Hike Likely Soon

To address its financial challenges, the Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC) is seeking government approval for a fare hike across its bus network. This proposal, which has been under consideration for a while, comes after nearly a decade of no fare revisions—last adjusted in 2016.
RSRTC officials have explained that rising operational costs, including increased diesel prices and growing employee salaries, have made this increase in RSRTC fare necessary.
With the approval of this hike, the state-run bus service aims to balance its budget and improve its revenue generation, which has not kept pace with expenses.
If approved, the RSRTC fare hike will be implemented across all bus categories, from ordinary buses to super luxury buses.

Why is RSRTC Proposing a Fare Hike?
RSRTC has been facing a growing financial strain due to the continuous rise in operational costs. The last fare revision took place nearly nine years ago.
Over this period, diesel prices have increased by one and a half times, along with higher operating costs and employee salary hikes under the 7th Pay Commission. Despite these rising costs, the corporation’s revenue has failed to match the expenses, making it increasingly difficult for the RSRTC to maintain its services.
The RSRTC fare hike has been proposed to address these issues. These adjustments are intended to offset rising costs and ensure that the corporation can continue to provide affordable public transport to millions of passengers across Rajasthan.

Details of the RSRTC Fare Hike
The proposed RSRTC fare hike covers four categories of buses: Ordinary, Express, Deluxe, and Volvo. Here’s a breakdown of the current fares and the proposed new fares:
Category | Existing Fare (per km) | Proposed Fare (per km) |
---|---|---|
Ordinary | 85 paise | 115 paise |
Express | 90 paise | 125 paise |
Deluxe | 98 paise | 160 paise |
Volvo | 195 paise | 225 paise |
For example, the fare for an ordinary bus would increase by 30 paise per kilometer, while a deluxe bus fare would see a much larger hike of 62 paise per kilometer. The proposed fare adjustments are expected to help RSRTC offset the significant increase in costs over the past several years.

How Will RSRTC Implement the Fare Hike?
Despite the proposed increase in RSRTC fares, officials have clarified that the new fares won’t be implemented across the board immediately. The corporation plans to raise fares only in categories where a hike is absolutely necessary.
For instance, the maximum fare for express buses is currently capped at 90 paise per kilometer, but the new proposal seeks to raise this limit to 125 paise per kilometer.
Additionally, the corporation has assured that it will continue to monitor fare adjustments closely to ensure that they align with operational needs while keeping affordability in mind for commuters.

RSRTC’s Efforts to Improve Revenue Generation
In addition to the proposal to increase fares, RSRTC has been actively working on enhancing its operational efficiency. The corporation has implemented several measures to reduce revenue leakage and improve fuel efficiency.
One of the most notable changes has been the introduction of a live vehicle tracking system, which has not only helped streamline bus operations but also boosted fuel efficiency and ticket sales.
As a result of these efforts, RSRTC’s daily earnings have significantly increased, now averaging â‚ą5.5 crore per day—an improvement of â‚ą1 crore daily. This increase in revenue has been vital in helping the corporation stabilize financially.
