How the Bus Industry is Celebrating Women's Day in India: 2025

On the occasion of International Women’s Day, the Indian bus industry has introduced several initiatives to recognize and empower female passengers and workers.

From free rides to women-only bus services, various State Transport Units (STUs) and private companies are taking significant steps to ensure safer and more comfortable travel for women.

YoloBus Launches Women’s Special Service

YoloBus has introduced a Women’s Special Service starting March 7, 2025. This exclusive initiative is designed to provide a safer and more comfortable travel experience for female passengers.

The service, initially available on key routes like Gurgaon-Chandigarh, will feature an all-female crew to ensure security and ease of travel.

Additionally, YoloBus is offering exclusive discounts and loyalty benefits to female travelers, with plans to expand the service based on customer feedback.

Bus ticketing platform AbhiBus is facilitating bookings for this special service by YoloBus.

MTC Chennai Honoring Women in Public Transport

At the ASRTU National Public Bus Transport Excellence Awards 2023-24, held in New Delhi, MTC Chennai recognized the contributions of women in the transport sector. Two outstanding employees were felicitated:

  • R. Jothi Kamala Bai – Senior Driver with 14 years of service (Chrompet 1 Depot)
  • P. Vendamani – Senior Conductor with 15 years of service (T. Nagar Depot)

They were honored by Dr. Kiran Bedi, IPS (Retd.) & Former Lt. Governor of Puducherry, for their dedication and contribution to public transport.

J&K Government Announces Free Bus Travel for Women

Coinciding with Women’s Day, the J&K Government announced free bus travel for women in all government-owned public transport, including e-buses.

The initiative will begin on April 1, 2025, and was officially unveiled during the presentation of the J&K Budget 2025-26 in the Legislative Assembly.

Free Bus Rides Across Multiple STUs

Several State Transport Undertakings (STUs) have also launched free bus services for women on Women’s Day as a gesture of appreciation. These include:

  • MBMT – Ladies Free Bus Ride on Tejaswini Buses
  • PMPML – Free Service across 13 routes in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad
  • CRUT Bhubaneswar – Offering complimentary rides
  • BMTC Bengaluru – Providing free travel on all buses, including Airport Vayu Vajra/Vajra AC
  • GMDA (Gurgaon Metropolitan Development Authority) – Launching special pink buses on two routes
