In an unprecedented historic move towards eco-friendly transportation, Delhi adds 500 electric buses to its fleet today. This is by far the largest-ever single induction of electric buses in history.
Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal inaugurated 500 new electric low-floor buses under the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), marking a momentous leap in the city’s commitment to sustainable transit.
These buses are made by Tata Motors and are part of a larger order of 1,500 low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses to be delivered to Delhi.

Largest Single Induction of Electric Buses Ever
Delhi has achieved a significant milestone with the introduction of 500 electric buses, marking the largest single induction of electric buses in history.
This unparalleled induction highlights the city’s dedication to expanding its green fleet. The LG and Chief Minister’s leadership in this event signifies a significant upswing in the number of electric buses servicing the capital.
Earlier on September 23, 2023, Delhi inducted 400 electric buses built by Tata Motors.
Both these launches are part of a larger order of 1,500 low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses that Tata Motors will deliver to Delhi.

Delhi Leads The Charge with 1300 Electric Buses in its Fleet
Delhi Transport Minister Kailash Gahlot expresses enthusiasm, stating, “With the addition of 500 electric buses today, Delhi’s electric bus count will soar to 1,300, the highest in any Indian city.” This figure surpasses other cities’ electric bus fleets, solidifying Delhi’s position as a leader in sustainable urban transport.

Impressive Environmental Impact
Since January 2022, Delhi’s existing fleet of 800 electric buses has covered over 42 million kilometres, resulting in a substantial reduction of 34,000 tonnes of CO2. The fleet expansion is expected to amplify these environmental benefits.
Delhi’s 2025 Electric Bus Target
Looking ahead, officials envision an ambitious plan for the city’s public transport. By 2025, Delhi targets to operate a total of 10,480 buses, with electric vehicles constituting 80% of the fleet.
This transition is forecasted to reduce carbon emissions by approximately 4.67 lakh tonnes annually, contributing to cleaner air and a healthier environment.
Aligned with the city’s commitment to sustainable transport, the older low-floor buses will gradually be retired. An official states, “By 2025, the old buses will be almost entirely phased out,” highlighting the city’s shift towards cleaner and more sustainable transportation modes.
