Delhi is Now the City with the Highest Electric Buses in India
Yes, Delhi is now the official city in India that has the highest electric buses in its fleet.
This brings the total count of electric buses in the Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) fleet to an impressive 800, firmly establishing Delhi as the city with the largest electric bus fleet in India.
The 400 new buses are Starbus EV: Tata 4/12m Low Floor AC Electric buses that were delivered by Tata Motors Limited through its subsidiary, TML CV Mobility Solutions Ltd.
This is part of a larger agreement with DTC to supply, maintain, and operate 1,500 low-floor, air-conditioned electric buses for a 12-year duration.
These zero-emission buses, engineered on a cutting-edge architecture, boast the latest features and are powered by advanced battery systems.
With this deployment, Tata Motors achieved a significant milestone as well, having supplied over 1,000 e-buses nationwide.
In line with the state government’s relentless efforts to combat pollution, these buses signify a pivotal shift towards cleaner fuel in public transportation.
Equipped with essential features such as GPS, CCTV cameras, and panic buttons, a strong emphasis on passenger safety, especially for women, is evident.
These security measures will be integrated into the centralized Command and Control Centre at Kashmere Gate, ensuring real-time monitoring and response capabilities.
Arvind Kejriwal announced, “These buses are part of the 921 buses under the subsidy scheme, for which a subsidy of ₹417 crore has been given by the Centre and the Delhi government will spend ₹3,674 crore.”
“The government has set an ambitious target of introducing a total of 8,000 electric buses on Delhi’s roads by the close of 2025, significantly transforming the city’s public transportation landscape,” he added.
Taking to social media, Kejriwal expressed his vision, “Our target is to introduce a total of 8,000 electric buses on the roads of Delhi by the end of 2025. At that time there will be more than 10,000 buses in Delhi, of which 80 percent will be electric. Very soon Delhi will also be known all over the world for its excellent electric buses.”
The state government is resolute in its commitment to further augment the electric bus fleet to 1,500 units by the end of this year.
Concurrently, plans to fortify the EV infrastructure for public transport are underway, encompassing enhancements to the electricity grid, installing high-tension power lines, and establishing sub-stations at each bus depot.
