Ashok Leyland will Supply 500 Electric Buses to Chennai MTC
Indian commercial vehicle major Ashok Leyland has announced that it has bagged an order to supply 500 electric buses to Chennai MTC. While Switch Mobility will supply the buses, OHM Global Mobility will operate and maintain them for 12 years.
In the latest electric bus news, Ashok Leyland subsidiary OHM Global Mobility has secured an order to supply 500 electric buses to the Chennai Metropolitan Transport Corporation.
Switch Mobility, another subsidiary of Ashok Leyland, will supply the Switch EiV 12 model, 12-meter, ultra-low-floor electric buses to OHM Global Mobility.
OHM Global Mobility will operate and maintain these buses for 12 years as per the contract with Chennai MTC. While 400 of these buses will be non-AC, 100 of them will be AC buses.

The electric buses are designed to comfortably seat 37 passengers, with space for an additional 24 standing passengers.
With a range of over 200 kilometers per charge, these buses are ideal for Chennai’s long city routes, ensuring uninterrupted service across the city’s vast urban landscape.
To ensure efficient operations and reduced downtime, the Chennai MTC will develop charging infrastructure at six of its key depots:
- Perumbur
- Perumbakam
- Poonamalle
- Vyasapandi
- Thondiapet
- KK Nagar

Switch EiV12 Ultra-Low-Floor Electric Buses
The Switch EiV12 is a modern electric bus powered by a 650V electric architecture. It is packed with IP67-rated batteries, ensuring durability and safety.
Engineered for both comfort and efficiency, the Switch EiV12 features an ultra-low-floor design, enabling faster and easier boarding, which not only enhances passenger convenience but also improves overall accessibility and reduces travel time.
Designed for inclusivity, the bus is equipped with a wheelchair ramp and secure anchorage points, making it fully wheelchair accessible.
It also offers the highest seating capacity in its segment, with chassis-mounted batteries that provide a lower center of gravity, enhancing stability and maneuverability in congested urban areas.
