JBM Ecolife Mobility, the electric bus operations arm of JBM Auto, has secured a long-term strategic investment of ₹750 crore from Motilal Oswal Alternates (MO Alternates), marking what the company describes as the largest investment by an Indian investor in the electric mobility space to date.

The investment comes at a critical stage for India’s public transport electrification journey. While thousands of electric buses have been tendered and ordered across the country, the industry’s focus is now shifting from announcements and procurement to large-scale deployment and operations.

According to JBM Ecolife, the capital will be used to accelerate the rollout of electric buses operating under long-term agreements with state transport authorities across multiple cities.

Why This Investment Matters

India’s electric bus market is entering a new phase where success will be determined not by vehicle orders alone, but by the ability to deploy, operate, and maintain large fleets efficiently.

For investors, this creates an opportunity to participate in long-term infrastructure-backed mobility projects supported by government programmes such as PM e-Bus Sewa and PM E-Drive.

For operators and OEMs, access to growth capital remains one of the key enablers for scaling electric mobility networks.

The investment also signals increasing confidence among institutional investors in the long-term economics of electric public transport.

JBM Looks to Expand Deployment Footprint

JBM is already among the largest players in India’s electric bus ecosystem. According to data released earlier this month, the JBM emerged as the market leader in May 2026, accounting for nearly 49% of all electric bus registrations during the month.

The company currently has around 3,400 electric buses deployed across the country and expects that number to reach approximately 5,000 within the next 12 months.

Its consolidated order book, including buses deployed and under execution, exceeds 10,000 electric buses.

Speaking on the development, Nishant Arya, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of JBM Auto, said the investment would help accelerate deployment across multiple states while supporting cleaner and more efficient public transport systems.

He added that India is now the world’s third-largest electric bus market and is undergoing a historic transition towards electrified public transportation.

Infrastructure and Execution Remain the Next Challenge

The investment arrives at a time when the electric bus industry is confronting a different set of challenges.

Industry discussions increasingly revolve around charging infrastructure, depot readiness, financing structures, grid capacity, and operational efficiency rather than vehicle technology alone.

While electric bus adoption has gathered significant momentum, large-scale deployment requires coordinated efforts between OEMs, operators, financiers, utilities, and government agencies.

This is where investments of this scale become important, enabling operators to build the infrastructure and operational ecosystems needed to support long-term growth.

Manufacturing Scale Already in Place

JBM has also invested heavily in manufacturing capacity. The company operates one of the world’s largest dedicated integrated electric bus manufacturing facilities outside China, located in the Delhi-NCR region. The facility has an annual production capacity of 20,000 electric buses.

Since entering the electric bus segment in 2018, JBM’s buses have collectively clocked over 400 million electric kilometres and served more than 1.5 billion passengers globally.

Industry Perspective

The ₹750 crore investment reflects a broader shift in India’s electric mobility ecosystem.

The conversation is no longer centred on whether electric buses will become mainstream. Instead, attention is turning towards execution, deployment, and the creation of sustainable business models capable of supporting thousands of buses on the road.
