MK Stalin Lays Foundation Stone for ₹822.70 Crore Bus Terminus in Chennai

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday laid the foundation stone for the construction of a new integrated multi-modal transport bus terminus and Kuralagam building complex at Broadway in Chennai, with a total project cost of ₹822.70 crore.
The project aims to redevelop one of the city’s oldest transport hubs into a modern, multi-purpose infrastructure facility with enhanced passenger amenities and seamless connectivity.
The redevelopment is being undertaken as part of the state government’s broader urban mobility and infrastructure modernisation programme.

The new facility will be constructed on the site of the existing Broadway bus stand, which was built between 1960 and 1964 and once served as Chennai’s primary long-distance bus terminal.
Due to rising congestion and expanding urban development, long-distance bus operations were shifted in 2002, and the Broadway terminal has since been used predominantly for city bus services.
Under the new plan, the Broadway site will be transformed into a fully integrated multi-modal transport hub, connecting Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) bus services with the High Court Metro station, MRTS and suburban rail networks.
The project is expected to significantly improve passenger movement, reduce surface-level congestion, and enhance last-mile connectivity in the densely populated George Town and Parrys Corner areas.
The proposed development includes a nine-level Multi-Modal Facility Complex (MMFC) and a separate ten-level Kuralagam building. The MMFC will be constructed on a 26,240 square metre land parcel, with a total built-up area of approximately 1.36 lakh square metres.
The complex will house 73 bus bays, dedicated passenger concourses, ticketing areas, retail and commercial spaces, office facilities, and structured parking for both two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The layout has been designed to ensure smooth segregation of pedestrian and vehicular movement to minimise operational disruptions.
In addition to transport infrastructure, the complex will be equipped with modern amenities including advanced electrical and ventilation systems, air-cooling equipment, comprehensive fire safety installations, elevators, escalators and moving walkways.
The design also incorporates sewage treatment facilities, an Integrated Building Management System (IBMS), public restrooms and improved external walkways to enhance commuter convenience and safety.
Senior government officials, including Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru and Forest and Environment Minister R.S. Rajakannappan, along with officials from the Chennai City Municipal Corporation and other departments, were present at the foundation stone-laying ceremony.
Once completed, the new Broadway integrated terminus is expected to play a critical role in strengthening Chennai’s public transport network, supporting sustainable urban mobility, and easing congestion in one of the city’s busiest commercial districts.
