At least eight people were killed and 25 others injured in a tragic Punjab bus accident after a mini-bus carrying pilgrims overturned in the Bassi Pathana area of Fatehgarh Sahib district on the night of April 14, 2026.

The victims were returning from Sri Anandpur Sahib after attending the Baisakhi Mela when the accident occurred around 10:30 pm on the Chunni–Morinda road.

Cause of the Bus Accident Near Bassi Pathana

According to police, the mini-bus was carrying around 30–35 passengers when the driver lost control of the vehicle. The bus crashed into an electric pole before overturning.

Six passengers died on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries during treatment.

Survivors told authorities that a possible axle failure may have contributed to the accident, though officials have not confirmed the exact cause of the Punjab bus accident yet.

Investigation Underway Into Cause of Accident

Authorities have launched an investigation to determine whether the accident was caused by mechanical failure or driver negligence.

  • possible axle failure

Statements from survivors are also being recorded as part of the probe.

Emergency teams rushed to the site and shifted the injured to nearby government hospitals in Fatehgarh Sahib.

Several critically injured passengers were later referred to the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh for advanced treatment.

Police officials said rescue operations were carried out swiftly with the help of local residents and emergency responders.

PM Modi Expresses Grief

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences over the loss of lives in the Punjab bus accident.

In a post on X, the Prime Minister’s Office said he was pained by the incident and prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured.

Shiromani Akali Dal leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal also expressed grief, offering condolences to the families of the deceased.

Rising Safety Concerns in Bus Operations

The Fatehgarh Sahib bus accident once again highlights growing concerns around passenger safety, particularly the role of driver behaviour and fatigue in such incidents.
