The Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) has announced the launch of a new TNSTC Vaikom and Chennai bus service, enhancing connectivity between Vaikom in Kerala and Chennai in Tamil Nadu.
The announcement was made by Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar after the 13th national conference of the Federation of Indian Rationalist Associations.
The new route comes after discussions and suggestions by Dravidar Kazhagam leader K. Veeramani and the celebrations of the Vaikom Satyagraha Centenary, which were attended by the Chief Ministers of both Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
This new daily bus route is expected to be a reliable and cost-effective travel option for passengers, promoting smoother travel between the two states.

Key Details of the TNSTC Vaikom and Chennai Bus Service
- Departure from Vaikom: Buses will depart from Vaikom at 3:30 PM, arriving in Chennai at 8:00 AM.
- Departure from Chennai: Buses will leave Chennai at 4:00 PM, reaching Vaikom at 8:30 AM the next day.
While the launch is a welcome development, details regarding the launch date have not yet been disclosed. Additionally, the financials behind the service’s introduction remain undisclosed.
Transport Minister S. S. Sivasankar also addressed concerns about the high fares often charged by private buses, particularly during festive seasons.
As part of efforts to regulate this, private buses operating under contract will now be required to adhere to fair pricing guidelines. Furthermore, the Tamil Nadu government plans to expand GPS tracking devices across the state’s public transport system to enhance monitoring and passenger experience.
The TNSTC Vaikom and Chennai bus service is set to offer commuters a dependable, affordable travel option, benefitting both regions and strengthening transportation networks between Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
