Tamil Nadu Boosts Public Transport with 399 New Routes and Over 2500 New Buses
Currently, 725 buses are running on 399 new routes, while 638 buses have been reintroduced on 519 routes where services were previously discontinued before May 2021, according to the statement.
According to a statement by the Tamil Nadu Transport Department, the DMK government has made significant strides in enhancing bus services across the state since it took office in 2021.
Not only have new routes been added, but many previously suspended services have been reinstated to better serve the public.
Introduction of New Bus Routes
In a bid to improve connectivity, the government has introduced bus services on 399 new routes, providing an essential transportation option for residents in previously underserved areas.
Currently, 725 buses are operating on these newly established routes, making travel more accessible to a larger population.
Alongside the new routes, the government has also worked to restore bus services on 617 routes where operations had been halted in the past.
This move aims to ensure that areas, once deprived of reliable transportation options, can now benefit from regular bus services. As of now, 638 buses are in service on these reinstated routes, contributing to the restoration of connectivity.
Investment in Free Transportation for Students
The Tamil Nadu government has also made substantial investments in supporting students by providing free bus services for both school and college students. Since May 2021, a total of Rs 5,328 crore has been allocated for this initiative, helping thousands of students commute without financial burdens.
Procurement of New Buses
As part of its ongoing efforts to improve public transportation infrastructure, the state has procured 2,578 new buses to date.
The department also plans to purchase a total of 8,682 new buses, which will further modernize and expand the public transport network.
Additionally, the transport department has focused on revamping its fleet by initiating a renovation program.
As of October 31, 1,310 renovated buses have been put into service, with the remaining buses still undergoing repairs. The renovation of 1,500 buses was planned for the years 2022-23 and 2023-24, with an estimated expenditure of Rs 206.34 crore.

Since its launch, women have collectively made 570.86 crore trips using this service, with an average of 57.07 lakh women taking advantage of free travel daily across the state.
Enhanced Facilities for the Elderly and Cancer Patients
To further ease the commuting experience for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and cancer patients, the Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced a convenient facility for obtaining monthly passes at e-Seva centers.
This initiative aims to simplify the process for those who rely on public transport for their daily needs.
