2024 | Know the new Chennai MTC Low-Floor Bus Routes

Minister of Sports Development, Udayanidhi Stalin, and Transport Minister, S.C. Sivashankar, recently inaugurated 100 new buses in Chennai. Of these, 58 are Ultra-Low Entry (ULE) buses, 38 normal buses and 12 are refurbished Chennai city buses. Here are the specifications and the new MTC low-floor bus routes.

MTC Chennai’s fleet has been recently expanded with the addition of 58 new Ultra-Low Entry (ULE) buses, which were fully built by Ashok Leyland.

These buses were officially flagged off on August 4, by the Hon’ble Minister of Sports Development, Udayanidhi Stalin, and the Transport Minister, S.C. Sivashankar.

A total of 100 buses were flagged off at the Chennai Depot worth Rs.66.15 crore. Out of a total of 100, 58 are Ultra-Low-Entry (ULE) buses, 30 are normal buses and 12 are refurbished Chennai city buses.

In December 2023, Ashok Leyland secured a major contract from the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation (TNSTC) to supply 552 Ultra-Low Entry buses.

Out of the 552 Ultra-Low Entry buses, MTC- Chennai would get 352 while Coimbatore and Madurai would get 100 buses each.

This significant order, valued at Rs 501 crore, was part of the Tamil Nadu government’s commitment to improving public transport accessibility for differently-abled passengers.

Funding for this project will be supported by the German development bank KfW.

The MTC Chennai low-floor buses feature an H-series 6-cylinder 4-valve 184 kW (246 hp) engine. They are designed with step-less entry for ease of access, a rear engine configuration, and automatic transmission.

The buses have front disc brakes, electronically controlled front and rear air suspension, and an intelligent transportation system.

This system includes CCTV, destination boards displaying vehicle locations, and real-time vehicle tracking. These specifications ensure that the buses are comfortable and certified as differently-abled passenger-friendly.
