Fresh Bus Launches Performance-Based Awards to Strengthen Driving Safety

Fresh Bus, India’s intercity electric bus operator, has launched the Best Captain Award, an annual recognition programme that will reward bus captains for safe driving and responsible fleet care. The initiative offers individual rewards of up to ₹1 lakh and could result in an annual payout exceeding ₹5 crore, depending on the number of eligible winners.

The programme will run from October 20, 2026, to October 9, 2027, covering the period between Vijayadashami 2026 and Vijayadashami 2027. It is designed to make safety performance a measurable part of the company’s operating culture while recognising captains who consistently demonstrate responsible driving practices.

Three Reward Categories Based On Safety Scores

Under the Best Captain Award, captains will be evaluated through a 100-point scoring framework. The assessment will consider their safety performance and fleet care throughout the annual cycle.

The reward structure has three categories:

• ₹1 lakh for captains achieving a perfect safety score of 100
• ₹75,000 for captains scoring between 85 and 99
• ₹50,000 for captains scoring between 70 and 84

The programme has no cap on the number of winners. Every captain qualifying for a category will receive the full reward. With more than 500 captains, the company estimates the annual payout could exceed ₹5 crore, depending on the number of eligible recipients.

Fresh Bus said the evaluation will rely entirely on documented records and verified data to maintain fairness, consistency and transparency. Alongside monetary rewards, winners will receive certificates and recognition on depot notice boards.

The company has also drawn on its existing captain performance assessments to recognise several drivers associated with Fresh Bus since 2023. These captains have demonstrated consistent driving practices and achieved a perfect safety score of 100.

Driver behaviour remains a critical part of bus safety. Vehicle technology, monitoring systems and operating procedures can reduce risks, but their effectiveness ultimately depends on the people behind the wheel.

Fresh Bus is taking a financial incentive-led approach by linking captain recognition to documented safety performance. The decision to remove the cap on winners is notable. It allows the programme to reward every captain who meets the prescribed standards rather than limiting recognition to a fixed number of employees.

The long-term value of the initiative will depend on how consistently the scoring framework is implemented and how clearly safety and fleet-care parameters are defined. If sustained, such programmes can help make responsible driving a measurable operational priority across the intercity bus sector.
