TGSRTC to Add 2800 electric buses Convert 240 Diesel Buses

The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has announced an ambitious plan to induct 2,800 electric buses within Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits by 2027.
The initiative forms part of a broader strategy to reduce vehicular emissions, modernise public transport, and promote sustainable urban mobility.
Officials said the corporation will rely partly on retrofitting existing diesel buses into electric vehicles, marking one of the first large-scale retrofitting efforts by a state-run transport utility in the country.
240 Diesel Buses to Be Converted
TGSRTC floated tenders for the retrofitting project on September 15, 2025, and finalised the process by September 30, 2025.
Contracts have been awarded to Sai Green Mobility for converting 200 buses and to Kalyani Powertrain Limited for retrofitting 40 buses.
The move builds on a pilot project launched in 2023, where a diesel bus from the Mushirabad depot was successfully converted into an electric vehicle in collaboration with a private firm.
The bus is currently operating under the Uppal depot, demonstrating the viability of the model.

Current Fleet and Expansion Plans
At present, 325 electric buses are operating from six depots across Hyderabad.
An additional 175 e-buses are expected to be inducted during the current financial year, further strengthening the city fleet.
To support the large-scale transition, the charging infrastructure is being expanded at 19 additional depots.
The corporation has also proposed the construction of 10 new depots and 10 dedicated charging stations.
The estimated cost of the proposed infrastructure development is approximately ₹392 crore.
Focus on Pollution Reduction and Public Health
TGSRTC officials stated that the induction of 2,800 electric buses by 2027 is expected to reduce carbon emissions and improve urban air quality significantly.
By encouraging greater public transport usage and reducing dependence on private vehicles, the corporation aims to contribute to better public health outcomes and a more sustainable urban transport ecosystem.
Managing Director Y. Nagi Reddy emphasised that the initiative is designed to strengthen Hyderabad’s public transport network while aligning with the state’s green mobility goals.
