The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has declared that beginning November 1, 2026, only CNG, electric, or BSVI diesel-powered buses will be permitted to enter Delhi.

Except for those licensed in Delhi, this instruction applies to all buses entering the city, including those operating under All India Tourist Permits, contract carriage permits, institutional buses, and school buses.

The action comes in response to growing concerns about Delhi’s excessive levels of air pollution, which are exacerbated by outdated and polluting buses from nearby states.

Though cleaner fuel technology has become more accessible, many interstate buses still run on antiquated engines and fuels that emit hazardous pollutants.

Previously, CAQM had urged state governments, including Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, and Jammu & Kashmir, to switch to clean fuel buses by mid-2024 or early 2025.

Many of these states, nevertheless, have not completely followed the guidelines, therefore, a stricter and actionable deadline is necessary.

To guarantee adherence to the new regulation, Delhi’s Transport Department and Traffic Police will rigorously check all entry points using Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) devices and RFID technology. Entry will be refused for any non-compliant buses.

Advance notice of the coming regulation has also been requested of all state governments for bus owners and transport firms so that the required plans may be made.

Delhi’s wider attempts to switch to greener, more sustainable public transportation, cut vehicle emissions, and improve air quality for its citizens center on this move.

The attention is now on other state governments and bus companies to act promptly and convert to CNG, electric, or BSVI-compliant buses before the 2026 deadline.
