The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) is gearing up to introduce 200 new buses across Greater Hyderabad by July. This fleet expansion is strategically timed with the reopening of schools and colleges, a period that typically sees a spike in commuter numbers.

Out of the 200 new TGSRTC buses, about 150 will be electric buses, reinforcing the state government’s push towards eco-friendly urban mobility.

With this move, Telangana continues its efforts to reduce vehicular emissions and modernize public transport through electric mobility solutions.

Currently, Hyderabad’s public buses carry around 23 to 24 lakh commuters daily. Thanks to the Mahalakshmi scheme, which offers free bus rides to women, about 14 to 15 lakh of these are women passengers.

This surge in ridership has stretched the existing fleet, with many buses running overcrowded during peak hours.

TGSRTC officials believe the 200 new TGSRTC buses will ease congestion, improve travel comfort, and make the daily commute safer for passengers.

Staff have stressed the urgent need for fleet augmentation, especially in view of the growing demand from women passengers and students.

Presently, TGSRTC operates approximately 3,100 buses in the city. The corporation has already started working with banks to secure financing for the new buses, and early responses have been promising.

This financial backing is expected to accelerate the procurement process.

In alignment with Telangana’s green goals, TGSRTC is also setting up EV charging infrastructure across 25 city bus depots to support its growing electric fleet.

The long-term plan includes the deployment of 1,000 electric buses in the Greater Hyderabad zone by the end of 2025.

This upcoming wave of buses, especially the electric vehicle additions, is not just about capacity — it’s about transforming Hyderabad’s public transport into a cleaner, smarter, and more inclusive system.
