The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada (RTC) marked its dedication to environmental sustainability by introducing two new hydrogen fuel cell buses into its fleet.

This technology represents a groundbreaking milestone in Nevada, as these buses are the pioneering hydrogen fuel cell electric buses to be put into operation across the state.

During the current event held at the Black Fire Innovation Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), one of the two 40-foot buses was unveiled. The event witnessed the participation of the following prominent figures:

  • U.S. Senator Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV)
  • U.S. Representative Susie Lee (NV-03)
  • Nevada Senate President Pro Tempore Pat Spearman
  • RTC Chair and Clark County Commissioner Justin Jones
  • RTC CEO MJ Maynard

Senator Cortez Masto emphasized, “Through my Innovation State Initiative, I aimed to foster employment opportunities in Nevada and encourage the adoption of emerging clean energy technologies, much like these innovative hydrogen fuel cell electric buses.”

“These buses are not only easier to maintain and quieter, but they also contribute to our efforts against climate change. I take pride in collaborating with RTC of Southern Nevada to secure funding for the deployment of these new buses on the city streets,” he added.

These technologically advanced vehicles were funded through a $3.8-million Low or No Emission Grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation. This grant also covers the training of staff to effectively operate and maintain this novel technology.

Jones expressed, “As Southern Nevada progresses towards a more environmentally conscious future, embracing sustainable transportation alternatives represents a responsible choice for the environment that propels our community forward.

“By investing in sustainable technology, we are fostering green employment opportunities that benefit both our environment and our economy.”

Salient Features of Hydrogen Fuel Cell Buses

The recently introduced hydrogen fuel cell buses are powered by compressed hydrogen gas, an abundant natural element. Through an electrochemical process, the fuel cell combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity, with water being the sole byproduct.

This technology offers numerous advantages over conventional power sources.

Hydrogen fuel cells do not emit greenhouse gases and produce minimal noise while the bus is stationary or in motion.

Hydrogen fuel cell buses can be refueled in under fifteen minutes and boast longer operational durations, which will effectively support the RTC’s operational routes.

Maynard conveyed, “We extend our utmost gratitude to our federal representatives for securing funding for these two hydrogen fuel cell electric buses. We have long been committed to investing in innovative transit technology to reduce our emissions footprint here in Southern Nevada.”

“This fresh technology, which is a newcomer to Southern Nevada, significantly contributes to our sustainability objectives, including the transition to a zero-emissions fleet,” he continued.

Furthermore, an order has been placed for an additional seven 60-foot hydrogen fuel cell buses, set to arrive in Southern Nevada in the fall of 2024.

Manufactured by New Flyer and featuring Ballard fuel cell technology, these buses will contribute to the region’s sustainable transportation efforts.

The hydrogen fuel for the initial two vehicles is supplied by Air Products.
