CRUT Launches ADAS Trial in Mo Buses to Reduce Accidents

After a string of accidents involving Mo buses over the last few months, the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) has been working hard to find a solution.
As part of this effort, CRUT has initiated Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) trial in Mo buses to curb road accidents and enhance passenger safety. This new technology aims to enhance road safety by alerting drivers about potential collisions, monitoring traffic signals, and ensuring adherence to lane discipline.
The ADAS trial in Mo buses, currently being conducted on four buses, including e-buses, will run for 10 days before finalizing the vendor. The initiative is expected to bring a significant reduction in accidents by providing real-time alerts to drivers, helping them maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.

How ADAS in Mo Buses Will Improve Safety
- The system alerts drivers when they get too close to other vehicles.
- It helps in recognizing traffic signals and designated lanes.
- It monitors the speed limit, which is capped at 40 kmph in city areas.
- It is linked to CRUT’s command control centre for real-time driver monitoring.
Implementation Plan and Expansion
CRUT has received interest from 8 to 10 vendors to supply the system. The ongoing trial run, launched on a proof-of-concept (POC) basis, will last for 10 days. Post-trial, a tender process will be initiated to finalize the vendor.
Once approved, ADAS will be installed in all 520 Mo Buses, including 150 e-buses, operating in Bhubaneswar, Cuttack, Sambalpur, and Rourkela.
MSRTC Bus Fare and Public Transport Safety
The adoption of ADAS aligns with national efforts to enhance public transport safety. The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus fare structure has also been revised recently to incorporate better safety and operational enhancements.
CRUT’s initiative reflects similar measures undertaken by other transport corporations to improve passenger security and efficiency.

Government’s Emphasis on Safety Standards
CRUT’s move aligns with the increasing adoption of ADAS in public transport across India. Similar safety enhancements have been discussed for MSRTC bus fare models, where efficiency and safety measures have improved commuter experience.
By integrating ADAS in Mo buses, CRUT aims to create a safer and more reliable public transport system, setting a benchmark for other regional transport bodies.
