AD Repower: Alexander Dennis Launches Electric Bus Repowering Program with KleanDrive
Alexander Dennis has launched AD Repower, an electric bus repowering solution in partnership with KleanDrive, to convert diesel buses like the Enviro400 double-decker into fully electric vehicles, reducing emissions and extending fleet lifespans.

Alexander Dennis, a leading UK bus manufacturer and subsidiary of NFI Group Inc., has unveiled its new electric bus repowering program called AD Repower, in partnership with specialist engineering firm KleanDrive.
This retrofit initiative is designed to convert existing diesel-powered buses into fully electric vehicles, reducing emissions and extending fleet life.
The program kicks off with the popular Enviro400 double-decker, with the first pilot scheduled for the first half of 2026 in the UK. More models and markets could follow depending on demand.

Key Features of AD Repower
- Powered by KleanDrive’s plug-and-play electric drivetrain
- Uses the Voith Electrical Drive System (VEDS), already familiar to operators using Alexander Dennis’s next-gen EVs
- Includes 352kWh CATL LFP batteries with an estimated 195-mile range at 50% passenger load
- Maintains full seating layout and interior design
- Conversion is done onsite, reducing downtime and enabling local maintenance
Company leaders emphasized that repowering is a strategic complement to offering new electric buses. It’s a cost-effective and sustainable approach to fleet decarbonization that avoids the environmental impact of scrapping fully functional vehicles.
“AD Repower delivers cleaner, quieter, and smoother journeys, while helping operators slash emissions and costs,” said Chris Gall, Group Engineering Director at Alexander Dennis.
“Instead of discarding high-quality buses, we retrofit them for a second life — all without compromising performance,” added Joe Tighe, CEO of KleanDrive.
