1000 New Electric Buses in Delhi By March 2025 Says New Transport Minister
Delhi is set to receive 1000 new electric buses in Delhi by March 2025, marking a major step towards enhancing public transport and promoting a greener, cleaner city.
Delhi is set to welcome over 1000 new electric buses in March 2025. The announcement was made by Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, who emphasized that the new fleet would be a key part of the government’s efforts to modernize and green the capital’s transportation network.
Delhi’s transport sector is currently operating at a loss of ₹235 crore, but Singh revealed that a recovery plan is in place, with the goal of making the sector profitable within a year.
The addition of the 1000 new electric buses in Delhi is expected to be a crucial first step in reducing reliance on private vehicles and encouraging a shift towards more sustainable, eco-friendly public transport options.
“The aim is to strengthen the transport network, making it more efficient and accessible to the public,” Singh stated. He highlighted that the introduction of electric buses will be just the beginning of a broader strategy, with major improvements planned over the next six months.
The first phase will focus on immediate reforms, while the second phase will involve significant projects aimed at enhancing the public transport experience for Delhi residents.
Singh also pointed out that Delhi has long lacked a sufficient number of electric buses. With the addition of more than 1,000 electric buses this month, the city will make substantial progress in creating a cleaner and greener transport system.
The move aligns with the government’s vision for modern and environmentally-friendly mobility options for the city.
In addition to these changes, Delhi’s Electric Vehicle (EV) policy, which had expired in August 2024, has been extended until March 31, 2025.
This extension includes reinstated subsidies and road tax exemptions for electric vehicle purchases made from January 2024 onwards, a measure that will further promote the adoption of clean energy vehicles in the city.

Meanwhile, the city’s public transport system continues to face challenges related to safety, with a committee from IIT Delhi tasked with investigating the causes of recent bus fire incidents.
Transport Minister Singh focused on the need to ensure efficient and safe public transport, pledging that under the current government, reforms would lead to a better, more sustainable system for Delhi’s residents.
