At least 15 people were killed and around 20 others injured in a tragic bus accident in Udhampur after a passenger bus lost control and rolled down a hill in Jammu and Kashmir on Monday.

The accident occurred around 10 am near Kagort village in the Ramnagar area, when the bus was negotiating a blind curve on the Ramnagar–Udhampur road.

Bus Falls Into Gorge on Blind Curve

According to local officials, the bus was travelling from a remote village towards Udhampur when the driver reportedly lost control near a sharp bend.

Preliminary inputs from locals suggest that the vehicle may have been overspeeding while negotiating the curve, leading to the crash.

The bus skidded off the road and plunged down the hillside, resulting in severe casualties.

Locals Lead Rescue, Authorities Step In

Local residents were the first to reach the accident site and began rescuing passengers from the wreckage. Police and emergency teams soon arrived and joined the operation.

Fifteen bodies were recovered from the site, while the injured were shifted to nearby hospitals, including Government Medical College (GMC) Udhampur.

Officials said several of the injured are in critical condition, and the death toll may rise.

Cause of Udampur Bus Accident

Officials have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident.

While initial reports indicate possible overspeeding and loss of control, authorities are also examining other factors, including road conditions and vehicle fitness.

Statements from survivors and local witnesses are being recorded.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah expressed deep sorrow over the Udhampur bus accident. Taking to X, he extended heartfelt condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

The Chief Minister said that the government stands firmly with the victims and their families in this difficult time, adding that all necessary assistance is being provided.

The Udhampur bus accident once again brings attention to the rising number of bus accidents in India of late.

While mechanical and road conditions are often examined, factors such as driver behaviour and fatigue also play a critical role, especially on longer routes and challenging terrains.
