In a milestone for Mexico’s green transport vision, Mexico has officially certified its first locally designed and manufactured electric bus, Taruk.

Created through a partnership between electric EV auto conversion company Megaflux and established bus manufacturer DINA SA (Diesel Nacional), Taruk represents Mexico’s aggressive entry into the electric bus market.

In Mexico’s indigenous Yaqui language, the word Taruk means ‘roadrunner’.

A Milestone Made in Mexico

Taruk is the first electric bus made in Mexico, with components assembled in Iztapalapa. Megaflux, a startup tech firm that’s experienced in electric drive systems, cooperated with bus manufacturer DINA SA to make the Taruk.

Megaflux brought the powertrain technology, and Dina was responsible for designing and building the bodywork and chassis. UNAM Engineering Institute and UAM Iztapalapa also participated to validate the efficiency and safety aspects of the bus.

With a target annual production of 2,000 units — and the possibility of reaching 6,000 — Taruk paves the way for Mexico’s public transport system to make a dramatic industrial and environmental leap.

Smart, Efficient & Sustainable

The Taruk is a 9.5-meter minibus with a capacity to transport 60 passengers. The bus can be fully charged in four hours and offers a range of up to 350 kilometers on a single charge.

All its components are bought and assembled in Iztapalapa, one of the municipalities of Mexico City, evidence of the campaign’s commitment to local industry and the creation of jobs locally.

The name Taruk is Yaqui for “roadrunner,” a synonym for speed, agility, and resourcefulness — qualities the builders feel capture the essence of the vehicle.

Altagracia Gómez, head of the Regional Economic Development and Relocation Advisory Council (Caderr), emphasized that the project began during Claudia Sheinbaum’s term as mayor of Mexico City. Its long-term vision is to end the Asian electric bus manufacturers’ monopoly in Latin America and offer Mexico as an authentic player in the zero-emission mobility sector.

The launch of Taruk is a breakthrough for Mexico’s electric mobility industry. While cities around the globe are demanding greener transport options, the success of this project can redefine Mexico’s urban transport story and enhance its position globally in the green technology market.

With successful scaling, Taruk can achieve more than it can lower emissions — it can generate employment opportunities, ensure technological autonomy, and drive subsequent innovations throughout Latin America.
