MTC Electric Bus Routes To Include More Depots Soon
Currently, all 120 MTC electric buses in Chennai are being operated from the Vyasarpadi Electric Bus Depot, which caters to nearby routes. However, OMR (Old Mahabalipuram Road) and ECR (East Coast Road) will be covered in the next phase.
Once the Perumbakkam Depot is inaugurated, MTC will expand e-bus services to those corridors. In total, 10 new electric depots are planned across Chennai, which will allow a wider rollout of e-buses across the city.
The current roll out of 120 electric buses in Chennai is part of a larger plan to introduce 1,225 electric buses in two phases.
Out of the 1,225 buses, 625 of them will be AC electric buses. Phase 1 of the project includes 225 AC electric buses and they are expected to be launched soon. Phase 2 will roll out 400 AC electric buses.

MTC Electric Bus Ticket Price
MTC has announced that no extra fare will be charged for travelling on the new electric buses. The fare for the new electric buses will be the same as MTC’s existing deluxe bus fare, making electric bus commutes affordable for regular passengers in Chennai.
Moreover, these buses will be operated as deluxe buses and will not qualify for the Vidiyal Payanam Scheme. Hence, the free bus rides for women scheme will not be applicable on these buses.
