Jaipur is set to introduce air-conditioned electric buses on city roads by mid-April, following the successful completion of trial runs conducted by the Jaipur City Transport Services Limited (JCTSL).

The rollout forms part of a broader electric mobility expansion that could see over 300 electric buses deployed in phases by June 2026, alongside infrastructure upgrades, including depot electrification and the expansion of bus stops across the city.

According to JCTSL Managing Director Narayan Singh, the three-day trial conducted across city routes achieved positive operational results, while the final technical report from manufacturers to the Union government is awaited.

Procurement Under PM e-Bus Programme

The electric buses are being procured through Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL), a subsidiary under the Union Ministry of Power, under the Pradhan Mantri e‑Bus Sewa Scheme.

Jaipur has been allocated 150 electric buses in the first consignment, all intended for city operations.

  • 40–50 buses expected by mid-April
  • Remaining buses to arrive within three months

The procurement was originally announced in the 2023 Rajasthan State Budget under former Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, although implementation was delayed due to funding constraints.

Trial Focus and Bus Specifications

During trials, both 9-metre and 12-metre AC electric buses were tested across major urban corridors. Authorities evaluated:

  • Battery performance
  • Charging efficiency
  • Performance in dense traffic
  • Passenger comfort and ride stability

The buses are expected to feature GPS tracking, CCTV surveillance, panic buttons, automatic doors, and accessibility provisions for differently-abled passengers.

JCTSL has begun preparing infrastructure to support electric bus operations. Initially, buses will be deployed from:

  • Todi Mod Depot (Vidhyadhar Nagar)
  • Bagrana Depot (Agra Road)

Both facilities have been upgraded with charging and maintenance infrastructure.

Network Expansion Planned

Alongside fleet induction, Jaipur’s public transport network is undergoing expansion:

  • Bus stops to increase from 193 to 293
  • Route rationalisation planned under Jaipur’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan

Larger Fleet Expansion by June

Officials indicated that Jaipur could see over 300 electric buses in operation by June 2026, in a phased deployment, significantly expanding the city’s clean public transport capacity.

The induction is expected to replace ageing diesel buses, improve connectivity, reduce emissions, and enhance commuter comfort across Jaipur’s growing urban network.
