Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has inducted 2,292 new buses and scrapped 1,886 ageing vehicles over the past two and a half years.

The fleet modernisation drive has expanded daily services across Bengaluru and positioned BMTC as one of the city’s transport corporations with the youngest bus fleets in India.

Fleet Expansion and Additional Bus Schedules

BMTC currently runs around 7,000 buses across nearly 6,283 daily schedules.

The introduction of new buses has enabled the corporation to add approximately 400 additional daily schedules over the past year.

The expanded capacity has improved frequency on existing routes and supported the launch of new routes aligned with commuter demand.

Each newly inducted bus is priced between ₹38 lakh and ₹42 lakh, depending on the model.

One of India’s Youngest City Bus Fleets

GT Prabhakar Reddy, Chief Traffic Manager of BMTC, said the corporation now operates one of the youngest fleets among city transport agencies in the country.

Newer buses reduce breakdown frequency and lower maintenance requirements, thereby improving schedule adherence and service reliability for daily commuters.

New Services on the NICE Road Corridor

BMTC has launched dedicated bus services along the NICE Road corridor, a key arterial route around Bengaluru. The corridor currently handles around 16,000 passengers daily through BMTC operations.

Express Buses From Suburban Areas

To close the connectivity gap between outlying areas and the city centre, BMTC has introduced express bus services from approximately 11 suburban locations, including Devanahalli, Doddaballapur, Nelamangala, and Dabaspet.

Operating with limited stops, these services cut travel time and offer faster end-to-end commutes, particularly during peak hours.

Karnataka’s Broader Fleet Renewal Drive

The modernisation is part of a statewide overhaul across Karnataka’s four transport corporations.

Collectively, 3,714 old buses have been scrapped, 2,099 refurbished, and 5,509 new buses inducted under the state’s fleet renewal programme.
