zingbus Reinforces 80 km/h Speed Lock Across All Services Under #SafeAt80

zingbus is reinforcing its road safety measures through its ‘No Need for Speed’ campaign, #SafeAt80, which maintains an 80 km/h speed lock across all its services. The intercity bus operator says the initiative combines speed control, AI-based driver monitoring and onboard safety systems to support safer journeys without compromising operational efficiency.
The campaign comes amid continued concerns about overspeeding on Indian roads. According to the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ report, overspeeding accounted for 70.28% of road accident deaths.
The World Health Organization (WHO) has also highlighted the relationship between speed and crash severity, estimating that a 1% increase in average speed is associated with a 4% increase in fatal-crash risk.
How Speed Reduction Can Improve Road Safety

The fourth-power speed-risk model cited in the campaign illustrates how changes in speed can significantly affect fatal-crash risk. Under comparable conditions, reducing average traffic speeds from 100 km/h to 80 km/h could correspond to approximately 59% fewer fatal crashes.
This is a model-based estimate, not a guaranteed reduction in crashes. However, it underlines the potential safety benefits of speed discipline, particularly on long-distance and overnight routes.
AI Driver Monitoring and Onboard Safety Measures
Beyond its 80 km/h speed lock, zingbus uses Driver Monitoring Systems (DMS) on equipped buses to identify potential signs of fatigue or distraction. The technology analyses facial cues, including eye movements and head position, and can trigger audible alerts when it detects warning signs.
These systems complement driver training, operational oversight and live GPS tracking. Other onboard measures highlighted by the company include CCTV, fire detection and suppression systems, fire extinguishers, fire-retardant interiors and emergency exits. Trained marshals also provide passengers with an onboard point of assistance.
Better Planning, Not Higher Speeds
Prashant Kumar, Co-founder and CEO of zingbus, said the company manages journey durations through operational planning rather than higher speeds.
“We are still able to match journey durations with speed locked at 80 km/h because we eliminate unnecessary stoppages and plan our services better. On services equipped with washrooms and food served onboard, passengers can take care of those needs within the coach, reducing additional roadside halts. We save time by organising the journey better while retaining planned driver rest breaks. That is the thinking behind ‘No Need for Speed’.”

He added that eliminating unnecessary stoppages and offering onboard washrooms and food on equipped services can reduce additional roadside halts.
zingbus’s #SafeAt80 initiative highlights an important operational principle for the intercity bus industry: journey efficiency does not have to depend on higher speeds. Consistent speed control, driver alertness, planned rest breaks and disciplined scheduling can work together to support safer operations. The key will be maintaining these standards consistently across services.
