Olectra Becomes First E-Bus OEM to Deploy 4,000 Electric Buses on Indian Roads

Olectra Greentech Limited has become the first electric bus manufacturer in India to deploy 4,000 electric buses on Indian roads, marking a major milestone for the country’s electric mobility sector.

The milestone was achieved with the handover of Olectra’s 4,000th electric bus during the flag-off ceremony of 297 electric buses inducted into the Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) fleet.

The event was attended by Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, senior government officials, HRTC representatives, and Olectra executives.

With 4,000 electric buses operating across multiple states and cities, Olectra Greentech has strengthened its position as one of India’s largest electric bus manufacturers. The company said its buses are currently serving public transport undertakings nationwide, supporting the transition towards cleaner and more sustainable urban mobility.

According to the company, Olectra’s electric bus fleet has collectively covered more than 730 million kilometres, preventing over 6.5 lakh tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions while transporting millions of passengers across India.

The milestone highlights the increasing adoption of electric buses by state transport undertakings as cities accelerate efforts to decarbonise public transport.

Commenting on the achievement, Mahesh Babu, Managing Director of Olectra Greentech Ltd., said the deployment of 4,000 electric buses represents a defining milestone not only for the company but also for India’s electric mobility industry.

The latest milestone comes at a time when India’s electric bus market is witnessing rapid growth, supported by government initiatives such as the PM E-Drive Scheme and increasing procurement by state transport undertakings.

Manufacturers including Olectra Greentech, SWITCH Mobility, JBM Electric Vehicles, PMI Electro Mobility, and EKA Mobility are expanding deployments as cities continue to electrify public transport fleets.

The induction of 297 electric buses into HRTC’s fleet is expected to further strengthen sustainable public transport in Himachal Pradesh while contributing to the state’s clean mobility goals.
