86 School Buses Seized in Hyderabad: Inspection Drive to Continue
Hyderabad News: A total of 86 school buses have been seized under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) by the Telangana Road Transport Department for operating without paperwork like fitness and permit.
June 13, Hyderabad: As schools opened after the long summer vacations, the Telangana Road Transport Department has started an inspection drive of school buses plying under the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC).
On Wednesday, around 86 buses were seized. These buses lacked proper paperwork like permits, fitness certificates, etc. A majority of them were also found to have not paid tax.
The total number of buses comprises 25 in Hyderabad district, 46 in Ranga Reddy district, and 15 in Medchal district.

The inspection initiative was launched following specific instructions from the State Transport Minister, Ponnam Prabhakar. During a teleconference on Tuesday, June 11, Minister Prabhakar underscored the significance of ensuring that every school bus operates only with a valid fitness certificate.
He also urged Transport officials to conduct strict inspections as well as awareness programs to educate drivers and the public.
“We make it clear every year that we will not allow school buses to operate without necessary documents like fitness certificate and permits. This commitment is integral to our ongoing safety initiative, which we communicated well in advance to all educational institutions,” senior RTA officials said.

Earlier in June 2023, the Telangana Road Transport Department conducted similar inspection drives and seized and had seized 57 school buses for operating without proper documents.
As per a senior RTA official, these drives are part of the Government’s ongoing safety initiative and similar inspections will continue in the future.
