Olectra Greentech Ltd. has successfully delivered a fleet of 20 electric buses to the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

These pollution-free and eco-friendly vehicles, equipped with air-conditioning, were inaugurated by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde at the Thane Depot on February 13, 2024.

The ceremony saw the presence of notable figures including Thane MLA Pratap Sarnaik, former MLA Ravindra Phatak, Principal Secretary of the Transport Department Parag Jain, and MSRTC‘s Managing Director Dr. Madhav Pusekar.

These 20 Olectra e Buzz buses mark the beginning of a broader initiative, with Olectra set to deliver a total of 5,150 electric buses to MSRTC.

These buses are a significant addition to the state’s transport infrastructure, known for being the lifeline of sub-urban and rural Maharashtra.

“MSRTC buses are the lifeline of Maharashtra, holding a cherished position in the hearts of rural commuters. Now, 5,150 fully air-conditioned, electric buses are set to join the MSRTC fleet ensuring passengers can travel comfortably and in an eco-friendly manner,” said CM Chief Minister Eknath Shinde.

Electric Buses will Operate on the Borivali-Thane-Nashik Route

These 34-seater, MSRTC electric buses are designated to operate on the Borivali-Thane-Nashik route, providing ticket fares comparable to those of the current Hirkani bus service.

Moreover, this service offers special discounts for women and senior citizens.

  • 50% off for women
  • 50% discount for senior citizens aged between 65 to 75 years
  • 100% discount for Amrut Senior Citizens aged above 75 years

The Borivali-Thane-Nashik route, covering approximately 150 km, is anticipated to be completed in approximately 4 to 4.5 hours.

Olectra Secured Contract for 5,150 Electric Buses from MSRTC

In July 2023, Olectra Greentech and EVEY Trans were granted a significant Letter of Intent (LoI) by the MSRTC.

This LoI encompasses the supply, operation, and maintenance of 5,150 electric buses along with associated electrical and civil infrastructure.

Valued at approximately Rs 10,000 crore, the contract spans a duration of 12 years.

Under the terms of the agreement, EVEY Trans will procure the buses from Olectra, with Olectra assuming responsibility for their maintenance throughout the 12-year contract period on a gross cost contract (GCC) basis.

Evey Trans Private Limited is a subsidiary of MEIL that operates 100% electric buses. It was established in 2018 and is a leader in zero-emission public transport services.
