MTC Expands Bus Services from Kilambakkam to Decongest Tambaram
In a strategic move to alleviate traffic congestion in Tambaram, MTC expands bus services from Kilambakkam, enhancing connectivity for commuters across Chennai.
The initiative follows the Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation’s (TNSTC) decision to reroute long-distance buses through Kilambakkam instead of Tambaram, particularly those traveling via Chengalpattu and Tindivanam.
This shift, recommended by the Tambaram City Traffic Police, aims to streamline traffic flow and improve commuter convenience.

Improved Connectivity for Commuters
With this new arrangement, long-distance buses from southern districts will now terminate at Kilambakkam, Chennai’s integrated transport hub, instead of entering Tambaram.
The terminus is designed to handle high passenger volumes efficiently, ensuring seamless intercity and intracity travel.

Increase in Fleet and Daily Trips
To accommodate the growing commuter demand, MTC has introduced 104 additional buses, increasing the number of daily trips by 816 across Chennai.
This expansion supplements the existing fleet of 589 buses operating on 80 routes, covering 3,795 trips per day.
Passengers are encouraged to take advantage of the enhanced MTC network for a more efficient and reliable travel experience.
Officials expect that this measure will not only reduce congestion in Tambaram but also strengthen Chennai’s public transport system, ensuring better accessibility and smoother transit for daily commuters.
