MTC Gold Service Overview

The MTC Premium AC electric bus service represents a new tier within Chennai’s city bus network, combining electric mobility with commuter-oriented features such as reserved seating, digital ticketing, and limited-stop operations.

Unlike regular city buses, the premium service operates on a seat-reservation model, where each passenger books a specific seat in advance through the mobile app.

Standing passengers are not permitted, ensuring a predictable and comfortable travel experience.

The initiative is designed primarily for daily office commuters travelling longer distances, particularly along major IT corridors where demand for reliable and comfortable public transport has been growing.

Routes Introduced at Launch

Initially, the MTC Gold service has been deployed on the following two high-demand corridors connecting IT hubs:

  • Route P570S: Siruseri IT Park → MGR Koyambedu Bus Terminus (CMBT)
  • Route P91: Thiruvanmiyur → Kilambakkam Central Bus Terminus (KCBT)

Route P570S provides a direct connection between Siruseri IT Park, one of Chennai’s largest technology clusters, and CMBT at Koyambedu, the city’s primary intercity bus terminal.

Route P91 links Thiruvanmiyur, a major residential and commercial hub along the IT corridor, with the Kilambakkam Central Bus Terminus, which serves long-distance buses to southern districts.

Both routes operate with limited stops, allowing faster and more predictable travel compared with conventional city bus services.

Background to the Service

MTC officials stated that the premium, air-conditioned, electric bus concept was developed after commuter surveys among IT professionals and office workers.

The study indicated that many commuters prefer private vehicles due to overcrowding, uncertain travel times, and limited onboard amenities in regular bus services.

The premium service aims to address these concerns by offering assured seating, predictable operations, and digital ticketing, while retaining the cost advantage of public transport.

The premium electric bus service is intended to attract commuters who currently rely on private vehicles.

With reserved seating, faster limited-stop operations, and digital ticketing, the service is designed to offer a viable alternative for daily office commuters travelling long distances across the city.

Transport planners note that each MTC Gold bus carrying 40–50 passengers can potentially replace several private vehicles during peak hours, helping ease congestion along major corridors such as OMR, GST Road, and the Siruseri–Koyambedu route.
