MSRTC has announced a 10% seasonal fare hike across routes from April 15, increasing travel costs during the peak summer period.

The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) has announced a 10% increase in bus fares, effective April 15, as part of a seasonal pricing adjustment during the summer travel period.

The fare hike is expected to impact travellers across Maharashtra, particularly those undertaking long-distance journeys, where ticket prices could increase by around ₹90 to ₹100.

This reflects a typical seasonal pricing approach adopted by state transport undertakings during peak demand periods to manage rising operational costs.

Why MSRTC Increased Fares

ST buses continue to remain a preferred mode of transport across Maharashtra, especially for rural connectivity, affordability, and availability of concessions.

However, the corporation is permitted to introduce seasonal fare hikes during peak demand periods. The current increase aligns with the summer travel surge, when passenger volumes typically rise.

MSRTC has implemented fare revisions in the past, including a 14.95% increase across routes, indicating recurring pricing adjustments to manage financial pressures.

Previous Fare Hike Rolled Back

Last year, a similar 10% fare hike introduced during the Diwali season was withdrawn following public opposition.

This raises the possibility of pushback once again, especially if the fare increase significantly impacts regular passengers.

What This Means for the Bus Industry

  • Seasonal fare hikes highlight ongoing financial pressure on state transport undertakings
  • Pricing adjustments during peak travel periods indicate continued reliance on fare-based revenue models
  • Fare increases may impact passenger demand, particularly for long-distance travel
  • Recurring revisions point to the need for more sustainable and balanced pricing strategies in public transport
