Rajasthan Plans Electric Double Decker Buses For Jaipur, Jodhpur And Udaipur

Rajasthan is moving ahead with plans to introduce electric double-decker buses in three of its major tourism cities, Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur, as part of a state-led effort to modernise urban public transport.
Transport officials have begun the procurement process, with Jaipur set to receive the largest share of the new fleet.
Jodhpur and Udaipur, both prominent destinations on the state’s tourism circuit, will receive the remaining vehicles.
State-Funded, Not Centrally Backed
Unlike most electric bus projects currently underway in Indian cities, this deployment will be financed directly by the Rajasthan state government rather than through national urban transport schemes.
Officials say this gives the state greater flexibility in vehicle selection and route design tailored to local needs.
Routes And Infrastructure Assessment
The new buses are intended to serve high-demand corridors connecting airports, railway stations, bus terminals and major tourist attractions.
Transport planners are assessing road infrastructure, including flyovers, railway bridges, and underpasses, to ensure adequate clearance for taller double-decker vehicles.
This is particularly relevant in older city zones where legacy infrastructure may restrict the movement of high-deck buses.

Why Double Deckers
Tourism-heavy cities like Jaipur, Jodhpur and Udaipur face recurring seasonal pressure on their transport networks.
Double-decker buses offer higher passenger capacity within the same road footprint, reducing reliance on private vehicles without requiring significant road expansion, an important consideration in heritage cities, where large-scale construction can affect historic neighbourhoods.
Jaipur’s existing long-term mobility plan already proposes dedicated bus corridors across the city. Officials say electric double-deckers could complement these corridors on high-demand, tourism-linked routes.
Electrifying the fleet also addresses urban air quality concerns.
Diesel buses currently dominate public transport in these cities, and switching to electric alternatives is expected to reduce both emissions and noise in densely populated urban areas.
