Does Free Bus Scheme for Women Work?
Despite imposing financial strain and causing losses for state-run transport corporations, the initiative plays a crucial role in addressing gender inequality in India.
The implementation of free bus rides for women has notably increased their ridership across various states.
In Telangana, the Maha Laxmi scheme led to a remarkable increase in women using TSRTC buses, soaring from 52% to 81% within a month.
Similarly, Punjab witnessed a significant rise in women commuters, from 61.18 lakh to 1.12 crore, following the introduction of a similar initiative.
By eliminating transportation costs, free bus schemes for women not only empower them economically by reducing expenses and expanding job opportunities but also improve their social, educational, and health outcomes.
In states like Delhi, Punjab, Telangana, etc., where such programs are implemented, they have supported increased school attendance, facilitated better access to medical facilities, and enhanced safety perceptions by encouraging more women to use public transport.
