Ahmedabad is set to induct 1,000 new electric AC buses, including 600 nine-metre and 400 twelve-metre buses, under the Government of India’s PM E-DRIVE Scheme, with 700 buses allocated to AMTS and 300 to BRTS.

The move will significantly expand the city’s electric public transport fleet, which currently includes around 350 buses, of which 200 are electric.

The new buses will be introduced by the Amdavad Municipal Corporation through its transport undertakings, Ahmedabad Municipal Transport Service, and Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited.

Procurement Under PM E-DRIVE Scheme

The buses are being procured under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme through a joint tender conducted by the Ministry of Heavy Industries and Convergence Energy Services Limited.

Ahmedabad has been allocated 1,000 electric buses under the programme.

The Board of Directors of Ahmedabad Janmarg Limited approved issuing a work order for procurement during its meeting on March 5, 2026. The buses will be operated under a Gross Cost Contract (GCC) model.

Contract Details

The tender was awarded to a consortium led by:

  • Delbus Mobility Private Limited
  • Indclan Mobility Pvt Ltd
  • PMI Electro Mobility Solutions Pvt Ltd

The consortium emerged as the lowest bidder (L1).

Under the approved proposal:

For AMTS

  • 600 nine-metre AC electric buses
  • Cost: ₹51.50 per km (excluding GST)

For AMTS and BRTS

  • 400 twelve-metre AC electric buses
  • 100 buses for AMTS
  • 300 buses for BRTS
  • Cost: ₹60.80 per km (excluding GST)

Expansion of Electric Bus Network

Ahmedabad’s BRTS network currently operates around 350 buses, including 200 electric buses. The city is also planning to induct another 250 electric buses as part of earlier expansion plans.

The civic body aims to gradually convert the entire BRTS fleet into electric buses.

Infrastructure and Clean Mobility Push

The project will include:

  • Deployment of fully air-conditioned electric buses
  • Development of charging infrastructure
  • Depot upgrades
  • Expansion of services on existing and new routes
