Damodar Group’s RUDRA VYOM Brings Indigenous Engineering to the 15M Coach Segment

India’s premium intercity coach segment is entering a new phase, with Indian manufacturers increasingly developing larger and more sophisticated platforms for the domestic market.
At the centre of this shift is RUDRA VYOM, the latest premium coach from Damodar Group, developed on the Ashok Leyland Garud 15M chassis.
Ashok Leyland describes the Garud 15M as India’s first front-engine multi-axle bus chassis. The 15-metre, 6×2 platform has a gross vehicle weight of 22.5 tonnes and is designed specifically for long-distance intercity operations.
For Damodar Group, the RUDRA VYOM project represents more than an extension of its existing Rudra platform. Moving from a conventional 13.5-metre architecture to a 15-metre multi-axle platform required extensive work across structural engineering, weight distribution, suspension behaviour, thermal management and vehicle dynamics.
Engineering Beyond the Conventional
According to Dinesh Sharma, Managing Director, Damodar Group, one of the biggest challenges was ensuring structural strength and stability across the longer body while maintaining the efficiency and practicality required for long-distance operations.
The larger architecture required close attention to chassis-body integration, axle load distribution, suspension behaviour and vehicle dynamics. Packaging also had to be reconsidered, including luggage space, electrical routing, HVAC integration, air-conditioning ducts and service accessibility.
The Garud 15M itself is engineered for long-distance applications, with full-air suspension, advanced braking technologies and configurations supporting up to 42 sleeper berths or 60 pushback seats.
For Damodar, the challenge was to translate the capabilities of this platform into a complete premium coach body suited to Indian operating conditions.
Evolving the Rudra Design
While the engineering architecture is new, the RUDRA VYOM retains the design identity of Damodar’s existing Rudra platform. Rather than creating a completely new visual language, the company adapted the proportions, stance and overall styling to suit the 15-metre multi-axle format.
The objective was to create a larger coach without losing the design continuity associated with the Rudra name.
“The idea behind the RUDRA VYOM was to evolve the existing Rudra platform into a more advanced flagship product while ensuring that the design continuity and brand recognition of the original Rudra remain intact.”

Focus on Passenger Comfort
Passenger experience was another major area of development for the RUDRA VYOM premium coach. With intercity journeys becoming increasingly focused on comfort and refinement, Damodar placed emphasis on reducing cabin noise, vibration and structural resonance.
The result is intended to be a quieter and smoother passenger environment for long-distance travel. The company also worked on space utilisation, lighting, ergonomics and interior finishes to create a more refined cabin experience.
HVAC integration presented another engineering challenge. In a 15-metre passenger cabin, maintaining consistent cooling from front to rear requires careful airflow management and thermal optimisation. Damodar says significant attention was therefore given to cooling distribution across the entire cabin.
Engineering Through Collaboration
The development of RUDRA VYOM also highlights the growing importance of OEM and coach-builder collaboration in India’s bus industry.
Damodar worked closely with Ashok Leyland to integrate the coach body with the Garud 15M chassis. Key areas included structural integration, load calculations, suspension behaviour, axle-load optimisation, braking dynamics, cooling systems and packaging.
The objective was to ensure that the chassis and body operated as a single integrated vehicle, balancing safety, ride comfort, stability, serviceability and operational efficiency. As bus platforms become increasingly sophisticated, this kind of engineering collaboration is becoming more important. The role of a coach builder is moving beyond body design and fabrication towards deeper integration with the underlying vehicle platform.
Building India’s Premium Coach Capability
The significance of RUDRA VYOM extends beyond one product. It reflects the growing capabilities of Indian coach manufacturers in developing premium mobility solutions for domestic operating conditions. India’s premium intercity segment increasingly demands more than styling and seating capacity.
Operators are looking for vehicles that combine passenger comfort, reliability, structural efficiency, thermal performance, safety and long-term operational practicality. The RUDRA VYOM brings these requirements together on the Garud 15M platform, marking another step in the evolution of India’s indigenous premium coach ecosystem.
With the RUDRA VYOM, Damodar Group is positioning its Rudra platform for a larger role in India’s premium intercity mobility market, while the Garud 15M provides the foundation for a new generation of 15-metre multi-axle coaches designed around Indian operating requirements.
