Ashok Leyland to Set Up Battery Pack Manufacturing Facility in Tamil Nadu

Ashok Leyland has begun construction of a battery pack manufacturing facility at Pillaipakkam near Chennai with an estimated investment of ₹400–500 crore.

The project is part of the investment commitments made by the Hinduja Group under a Memorandum of Understanding signed with the Government of Tamil Nadu in September 2025.

The facility will manufacture battery packs for electric vehicles and support the localisation of EV components in India.

It also aligns with the Tamil Nadu Electric Vehicle Policy 2023 and national initiatives aimed at strengthening the electric mobility ecosystem.

Foundation Ceremony

The foundation plaque was unveiled by M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.

The ceremony was attended by T. R. B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Investment Promotions and Commerce, along with officials from Guidance Tamil Nadu and the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu.

Senior leadership from Ashok Leyland, including Managing Director and CEO Shenu Agarwal, was present at the event.

Focus on EV Battery Manufacturing

The Pillaipakkam facility will focus on producing battery packs for electric commercial vehicles.

According to Dheeraj Hinduja, Executive Chairman of Ashok Leyland, the project is part of the company’s strategy to expand its electric mobility capabilities.

The company’s electric vehicle portfolio is developed alongside its subsidiary Switch Mobility, which manufactures electric buses and light commercial vehicles.

Ashok Leyland’s Manufacturing Presence in Tamil Nadu

Ashok Leyland established its first manufacturing facility in Ennore in 1948. The company now operates nine facilities in Tamil Nadu, spread across more than 800 acres.

The company has invested over ₹9,000 crore in the state and employs more than 37,000 people in Tamil Nadu. The new battery pack facility adds to its existing manufacturing and EV development operations in the state.
