The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) and Telangana Southern Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TGSPDCL) have agreed to establish electric vehicle charging infrastructure to support the rollout of 2,200 electric buses across Greater Hyderabad. The decision was taken at a coordination meeting held in Hyderabad on Thursday.

The charging stations will be set up at 25 TGSRTC depots within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. In addition, two charging stations will be established at the Suryapet depot, and one each in Sangareddy and Nalgonda districts.

The meeting was convened at the TGSPDCL headquarters to streamline the electricity connections required for electric bus charging points. Officials discussed substation requirements, power demand, and timelines for infrastructure execution.

“He assured that the corporation would provide space at available sites for switching stations or substations,” officials present at the meeting said.

According to TGSRTC estimates, the proposed charging infrastructure will require a power demand of approximately 124 megawatts. Discussions during the meeting focused on the development of substations, switching stations, and the laying of power lines to support the charging network.

TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Musharraf Ali Faruqui directed officials to expedite the process for providing power connections to TGSRTC depots. He instructed teams to process applications submitted by the transport corporation and prepare cost estimates within a defined timeline.

Officials said Faruqui asked TGSPDCL engineers to prepare estimates by February 1 and begin work immediately after approvals are in place.

The electric bus rollout is being planned in line with state government directives to expand clean public transport within GHMC limits. TGSRTC officials said the charging infrastructure plan is critical to ensure uninterrupted operations once the electric buses are inducted into service.

The coordination meeting was attended by senior officials from multiple departments, including Redco vice-chairman and managing director Anila, TGSPDCL directors V. Shivaji, Dr B. Narasimhulu, and Chakrapani, and TGSRTC executive directors M. Rajasekhar and Munishekar. Chief engineers and superintending engineers from TG Transco and TGSPDCL were also present.

Officials said the infrastructure rollout will be carried out in phases based on depot readiness and power availability. No specific commissioning dates for the charging stations were announced at the meeting.

TGSRTC has not disclosed the procurement schedule for the 2,200 electric buses. Power and transport department officials said further coordination meetings will be held as implementation progresses.
