In a major push towards sustainable urban transport, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) is set to introduce a green fleet of electric and CNG-powered buses. The move comes as part of a ₹270 crore budget allocation aimed at reducing pollution and improving public transport efficiency in the city.

Currently, NMMT operates 255 electric buses under central government funding, with 40 more set to join the fleet soon. To further cut diesel dependency, 100 additional electric buses have been planned for procurement.

Charging and Refuelling Infrastructure to Support Green Fleet

To ensure smooth operations, charging stations for electric vehicles will be set up under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) or Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) model. Additionally, CNG refuelling stations will be installed at depots and bus terminals to provide convenient access for both public and private transport users.

Tech-Driven Public Transport Upgrade

NMMT is also set to modernize its Intelligent Transport Management System (ITMS) to streamline bus operations. This upgrade will include:

  • Passenger Information Systems (PIS) for real-time updates.
  • Automatic Vehicle Location System (AVLS) for better fleet tracking.
  • Automatic Fare Collection System (AFCS) with smart ticketing solutions.
  • A dedicated mobile app and open-loop smart cards for passenger convenience.

A senior NMMT official stated that the revamped ITMS will improve route planning, scheduling, and overall service reliability.

Financial Sustainability and Expansion Plans

To ensure long-term financial viability, NMMT is expanding its bus network within the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The goal is to attract more passengers and improve service reliability through a targeted passenger growth campaign.

Revenue Diversification Initiatives:

  • A commercial complex at Vashi’s Sector 9 is expected to generate ₹32 crore annually through leasing.
  • A revised hoarding policy and digital billboards will boost advertising revenue.
  • Commercialization of tyre remoulding services and fuel stations at depots is under consideration.
  • New canteens at bus terminals will enhance passenger amenities while generating additional income.
