Shimla, Feb 22, 2025: The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) is set to significantly upgrade its fleet with the addition of 700 new buses, a move that promises to elevate public transportation across Himachal Pradesh.

The announcement was made during an important meeting of the HRTC Board of Directors, chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri, held at Hotel Holiday Home.

The new buses will include a variety of models designed to serve different travel needs across the state. The approved fleet expansion includes:

  • 250 diesel buses designed for intercity and rural routes, providing daily commuters with reliable travel options.
  • 24 luxury buses meant for premium travel, catering to long-distance passengers who require a more comfortable journey.
  • 297 Type-1 electric buses, which will support eco-friendly initiatives and are expected to be in operation within the next few months.
  • 100 mini buses (tempo travellers) to cater to areas with lower passenger traffic, providing flexibility in serving diverse routes.
  • An additional 23 Type-1 electric buses, reinforcing the state’s focus on reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable travel.

A Step Towards a Sustainable and Efficient Public Transport System

The addition of 700 new buses marks a major overhaul of the HRTC fleet, a vital step to improving the quality of public transport services in the state.

According to Deputy CM Agnihotri, this investment is a critical move to phase out older buses, which will be replaced to ensure a cleaner, more efficient, and more reliable transportation system.

This expansion will significantly improve travel experiences for residents and visitors alike, ensuring better connectivity within the state and beyond.

As the state continues to grow, the demand for improved and modern transportation has become a top priority. With the introduction of electric buses, the HRTC’s commitment to reducing environmental impact is clear. These buses will not only lower emissions but also make travel more comfortable and efficient for passengers.

Infrastructure Upgrades Alongside Fleet Expansion

To complement the new buses, HRTC is also investing in upgrading its infrastructure. New bus terminals are being built in Baddi and Bilaspur, which will help streamline operations and provide passengers with better facilities.

In addition to the terminals, the procurement of four cranes and two quick-response vehicles will ensure that buses are maintained in top condition and that any emergencies on the road are swiftly addressed.

These infrastructural improvements are part of a larger strategy to enhance the reliability of public transport in Himachal Pradesh, making it a more dependable and user-friendly service for the public.

HRTC’s Journey So Far

HRTC has come a long way since its formation in 1974 when it began with 733 buses on 379 routes. Over the decades, it has expanded considerably, now operating over 3,130 buses serving nearly 3,000 routes.

The most recent additions, such as the 25 Volvo buses and 50 Tempo Travellers introduced in 2023, show a clear pattern of modernization and diversification of services.

The allocation of Rs 517 crore for electric bus procurement and continued government support further highlights the commitment to providing high-quality transport services in the state.

The current expansion plan is part of a broader effort to modernize the fleet, improve service quality, and provide residents with a reliable mode of transport. By investing in both new buses and modern facilities, HRTC is paving the way for a more accessible and sustainable public transport system for all.

A New Era for Himachal’s Public Transport

With 700 new buses and improvements to the infrastructure, HRTC is on track to bring about a significant transformation in the state’s public transportation system.

This fleet expansion will not only improve the day-to-day commuting experience but will also create more sustainable travel options for future generations.

By focusing on both eco-friendly solutions and reliable services, the HRTC is taking a major step toward improving public transportation in Himachal Pradesh, ensuring that the state’s transport system meets the needs of a growing and modern population.

Stay tuned for further updates as HRTC continues to roll out these ambitious plans, leading the way toward a greener and more efficient public transport system in Himachal Pradesh.
