Delhi is set to see a major transformation in its public transport system, as Transport Minister Pankaj Singh revealed plans to introduce 11,000 electric buses in the city over the next one-and-a-half years.

The announcement came just a day after Singh took charge as the new minister.

Speaking to reporters, Singh confirmed that 50% of the Delhi Transport Corporation’s (DTC) fleet of CNG buses has already been phased out, with the remaining buses scheduled to be retired in the coming months.

The initiative is part of Delhi’s ongoing effort to reduce air pollution and promote sustainable transportation options.

“The arrival of electric buses has already begun, and 1,500 electric buses are currently operational on the city’s roads. By the end of 2026, we will have 11,000 electric buses in service,” Singh stated.

In addition to the push for electric buses, the minister assured the public that the free bus service for women would continue, emphasizing that improvements to public transportation in the city are a priority.

With this initiative, the Delhi government hopes to offer cleaner, greener, and more efficient transportation options for residents.

As the city moves forward with its electric bus plan, the initiative is expected to play a key role in tackling air pollution and improving the overall urban mobility experience.
