In May 2025, the Odisha government approved the Mukhyamantri Bus Seva (MBS), offering a 50% fare concession to women, students, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and transgender individuals.

This eco-friendly public transport initiative aims for safe, affordable, and efficient travel, connecting key towns, medical hubs, education centres, and business areas across the state.

Further cementing its promise to ease public transport, the Odisha government launched free bus travel for school students under the Mukhyamantri Bus Seva scheme.

Who Benefits & How It Works

  • Eligible Groups: Women, students, senior citizens, disabled persons, and transgender individuals
  • Concession Mode: A 50% discount on tickets across all MBS-run buses, both AC and non-AC
  • Free Travel: School childeren can travel for free under the scheme by showing their school IDs.
  • Payment Method: Valid through NCMC (National Common Mobility Card) for seamless boarding.

Safety Enhancements and Monitoring

The MBS fleet will deploy advanced safety and digital tracking systems to ensure commuter protection and transparency:

  • Live Vehicle Tracking (LVT)
  • Passenger Information Systems (PIS)
  • CCTV Cameras, Panic Buttons
  • Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) for safer rides

Scheme Objectives & Implementation

  • Operator: Managed and monitored by OSRTC (Odisha State Road Transport Corporation)
  • Funding: A ₹3,278 crore allocation over three years ensures long-term viability.
  • Aims: Improve rural access, spur local employment, and reinforce inclusive socio-economic development.

With Mukhyamantri Bus Seva, Odisha sets a new benchmark in inclusive transport, marrying affordability with safety and modern convenience. This move also aligns with broader goals of equitable mobility, economic empowerment, and rural upliftment.
