CRUT to Boost Passenger Safety with DFMS and ADAS in Ama Bus Fleet

In a major push to improve commuter safety and minimize road mishaps, the Capital Region Urban Transport (CRUT) is set to install Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in AMA Bus services.
Around 500 buses under the Ama Bus initiative will be equipped with ADAS and a Driver Fatigue Monitoring System (DFMS) in a phased rollout over the coming months.
Earlier in February 2025, CRUT had initiated trials of ADAS in Ama Bus services to evaluate its effectiveness in enhancing road safety.
CRUT Managing Director N Thirumala Naik revealed that the tendering process is currently underway and the technology partner for the project will be finalized shortly. These smart safety systems are part of CRUT’s broader plan to make Ama Bus services safer, more efficient, and technologically advanced.
The ADAS in Ama Bus initiative will introduce features such as collision warnings, blind spot detection, lane discipline guidance, and speed monitoring.

The system uses smart sensors and AI to keep drivers aware of nearby vehicles, pedestrians, and road signals. It ensures buses remain within their designated speed limits, especially in high-traffic urban zones where the speed cap is set at 40 kmph.
On the other hand, DFMS is designed to track driver alertness in real time. By monitoring signs of fatigue, distraction, and drowsiness, the system will send immediate audio and visual alerts to the driver and relay information to CRUT’s central command centre. This dual-alert mechanism ensures swift action in case of risky driving behavior.
Further enhancing the system is the Terminal Management System, which continuously transmits bus telemetry data to the CRUT headquarters for real-time monitoring. The ADAS in Ama Bus deployment also includes features like the Moving Off Information System to prevent accidents involving cyclists or pedestrians near stationary buses.

To implement this safety overhaul, CRUT will adopt a Software as a Service (SaaS) model. Under this model, a monthly subscription fee per bus will cover the complete lifecycle of ADAS and DFMS, including procurement, installation, and operational support for three years.
ADAS and DFMS are becoming essential technologies in public transport systems worldwide. While ADAS provides real-time support to drivers by reducing human error, DFMS ensures drivers are mentally and physically fit to operate. Their integration into the Ama Bus network marks a significant step forward in making Bhubaneswar’s public transport smarter and safer.
Earlier in March 2025, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) issued a draft notification mandating that all new passenger vehicles with a capacity of more than eight occupants must be equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) starting April 2026.
