The Ashok Leyland Lucknow factory was officially inaugurated today, marking a major milestone in the company’s green mobility journey and its long-term commitment to Uttar Pradesh.

As Uttar Pradesh’s first electric vehicle manufacturing plant, it was inaugurated by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh in the presence of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and Union Heavy Industries Minister H D Kumaraswamy.

Located at Sarojini Nagar Industrial Area near Lucknow Airport, the Ashok Leyland Greenfield plant spreads across more than 70 acres and is the company’s most advanced and sustainable manufacturing plant globally.

The plant has been designed with a clear focus on electric buses, along with electric travellers and electric cargo vehicles.

The Ashok Leyland electric bus plant in Uttar Pradesh has an initial annual production capacity of 2,500 vehicles, with provisions to scale up to 5,000 units.

Most of the workforce has been recruited locally, with a notable participation of women employees, reinforcing the plant’s role in regional employment generation and skill development.

The facility has been conceptualised as a green manufacturing hub, incorporating rooftop solar panels, energy-efficient LED lighting, battery-operated in-plant logistics, positive water balance measures, and a zero-discharge system.

These initiatives position the plant as a benchmark for sustainable industrial development.

Commenting on the inauguration, Ashok Leyland Chairman Dheeraj Hinduja said the Lucknow plant represents an important new chapter for the company in Uttar Pradesh. He highlighted its role in driving economic growth, creating employment, and advancing Ashok Leyland’s Net Zero ambitions.

MD and CEO Shenu Agarwal added that Uttar Pradesh’s proactive approach towards sustainability made it a natural partner for Ashok Leyland’s green mobility vision. He noted that the new facility, equipped with advanced automation and modern manufacturing technologies, will significantly strengthen the company’s electric bus manufacturing capabilities.
